“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” (Isaiah 43:2)
Our paths are not paved. At times the way is smooth and comfortable. At other times it is difficult to believe that there is really a place for one foot to step in front of the other. By beginning his sentences with “When,” Isaiah promises that floods and fires will occur during our journey. We will get drenched in this life. We will experience times of unbearable heat. Such promises seem an invitation to hole up and hide. BUT we are also promised that we will not drown. We will not burn. We do not traverse this road alone. Jesus travels with us to guide, encourage and shield us from fatal exposure to oppositional elements. We are redeemed before the trip even starts. Let us then venture forth with confidence, savoring the smooth times, expecting the rough, knowing that our Trail Guide always directs us toward the very heart of God.
Where are you in your journey?
