“Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalms 37:4)
Did you get everything you wanted for Christmas?
All the credit card applications which arrive in the mail assure me that I DESERVE to have the finer things this world can offer and if it wasn’t given to me during this season of gift getting (or was that giving?) then I should go buy it for myself…Right now! These companies are so concerned for my happiness that they would be willing to loan me the money I need to make these purchases.
The first half of this easily manipulated verse is “Delight yourself in the Lord.” I’ve noticed when my self is “delighting in the Lord,“ my heart’s desire has little to do with the extras a credit card can provide. God has a way of making my priorities less material and more eternal. Less about wants and more about needs. And what I need is a relationship with God who will fill my soul with desires that fit the shape of His heart.
Become aware of sentences which use the word “need” where the word want is more true. Do you see a difference between the two?
