Advent Thought for Christmas Day

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  The Word became flesh and lived for a while among us.  In him was life, and that life was the light of men…the light that shines in the darkness…the true light that gives light to every man…”  (John 1:1-9)

Have you ever noticed that in a dark room the tiniest spark is like a beacon to your eye?  Automatically your eyes are attracted to the only point of illumination.  A small flame becomes hope signaling the way.  It gives direction in a place which would otherwise seem overwhelmingly dark and scary.

In a beautiful metaphor John claims that in this dark world, Jesus is the light.  Throughout all time people have groped madly in the darkness searching for purpose and meaning – thinking for a time that they have found it in a new relationship or that perfect gift – but those flames flicker and die.  The only true, enduring light is found in the Christ.

The white candle in the center of the advent wreath is the Christ candle.  It reminds us that Jesus has come!  God has gift wrapped His Son in swaddling clothes and left His story to be rediscovered by our hearts each year at this time as we recount the events of His birth.

Darken the room as much as possible before lighting the Christ Candle to see how much difference His light can make!  May the gift of His light shine brightly in our lives.
