“Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!” (Luke 1:45)
When told that being “highly favored” by the Lord meant she would be pregnant and unmarried in a society which condemned such a condition, Mary responded, “May it be to me as you have said.” I have always been awed by such a trusting response after such shocking news. Even more impressive is that she held on to her belief as her belly swelled, the rumors swirled, and Joseph doubted. Mary had room in her life for the Promise of God, even when it seemed to negate everything she had known or expected. May we sing as one with Mary in trusting response to God’s call upon our lives.
“My soul praises the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me – holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has send the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers.”
