Day 31 Lenten Devotion

“O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever! Let Israel say, ‘His steadfast love endures forever’ (Psalm 118:1-2).”

These were the words of affirmation the people of Israel spoke as they approached the temple for worship. “His steadfast love endures forever.” It is an extraordinarily simple confession of faith and yet remarkably profound. It brings us back once again to this bedrock conviction: the Lord is GOOD!

All of us are wearing a ‘lens,’ a way of seeing God that is colored by our many life-experiences. A primary influence on our ‘lens’ is our parents. That is to say, our perception of who God is may be colored by the families in which we were raised. Even those who have been blessed by the most exemplary parents will find it necessary to learn to set their ‘lens’ aside because the best parents fall short of the goodness and steadfastness of the living God. This is why it’s so important that whenever we Christians speak of God, we point to Jesus. And whenever we point to Jesus, we look to the cross. Here is the absolute goodness and steadfast love to which we can absolutely and steadfastly entrust ourselves.
