Day 40 Lenten Devotion

“The women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how his body was laid. Then they returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment (Luke 23:55-56).”

Today is the last day of our Lenten journey. For these women who had followed Jesus from Galilee, this was the darkest day. All their hopes which had come to rest on Jesus the Messiah were dashed. The jubilation that had been theirs as they witnessed and experienced the reign of God breaking in through Jesus were now replaced by the dreadful ache of grief and despair. All of that changed on Easter Sunday. The resurrection of Jesus heralds the good news that EVERYTHING Jesus had said about the Kingdom of God being near is absolutely true! God’s reign has broken in through Jesus and we may live with the confidence that God will vanquish all of God’s enemies. Even death itself, which the Apostle Paul calls ‘the last enemy,’ shall be destroyed! As we approach Easter Sunday, let us prepare to celebrate as those who are fully prepared, those who have walked the journey of Lent and are leaning in irrepressibly to hear the news: “He is not here! He is risen!”
